สิ่งที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของสถานีรถไฟแห่งนี้ คือ พลับพลาพระมงกุฎเกล้าฯ เป็นพลับพลาจตุรมุขสร้างขึ้นในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เดิมมีชื่อว่า พลับพลาสนามจันทน์ ตั้งอยู่ในบริเวณพระราชวังสนามจันทร์ จังหวัดนครปฐม พลับพลานี้มีไว้ในการที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าฯ ชมสถานีรถไฟที่มีความคลาสสิกและสวยงามที่สุดในเมืองไทย สถาปัตยกรรมสีครีมตัดแดงแห่งนี้สร้างขึ้น ในปี พ.ศ. 2469 โดยพระเจ้าพี่ยาเธอ กรมพระกำแพงเพ็ชรอัครโยธิน เมื่อครั้งทรงดำรงตำแหน่งเป็น ผู้บังคับบัญชาการรถไฟแห่งกรุงสยามในสมัยนั้น อาคารหลังนี้ได้รับอิทธิพลจากสถาปัตยกรรมวิคทอเรีย มีการสร้างลวดลายให้สวยงามประดับเสาค้ำยัน ครั้นต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2511 สมัยพันเอกแสง จุลจาริตต์ เป็นผู้ว่าการรถไฟฯ ได้มีก่อสร้างพลับพลาสนามจันทร์ อันเป็นพลับพลาจตุรมุขที่สร้างในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จ พระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 6 ขึ้นที่นี่ ซึ่งเดิมเคยตั้งอยู่ในบริเวณพระราชวังสนามจันทร์ จังหวัดนครปฐม เพื่อใช้เป็นที่ประทับขึ้นและลงรถไฟของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว การก่อสร้างครั้งนี้เป็นฝีมือชาวไทยล้วน ๆ เมื่อสร้างเสร็จสมบูรณ์ ได้มีพิธีเปิดพลับพลาซึ่งมีการตั้งชื่อใหม่ว่า "พลับพลาพระมงกุฎเกล้าฯ " เมื่อวันที่ 6 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2517 โดยสมเด็จพระเจ้าภคินีเธอ เจ้าฟ้าเพชรรัตนราชสุดา สิริโสภาพัณณวดี เสด็จเป็นองค์ประธานเปิดงาน นอกจากนี้ที่สถานีรถไฟหัวหินยังเป็นสถานที่เก็บหัวรถจักรไอน้ำโบราณ ที่การรถไฟได้สั่งซื้อมาจากประเทศอังกฤษ ซึ่งหัวรถจักรนี้เคยวิ่งให้บริการในไทยก่อนสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 นอกจากนี้ยังมีร้านกาแฟเก๋ไก๋ริมทางรถไฟ เหมาะมานั่งชิว ๆ ถ่ายรูปชิค ๆ ได้

จากถนนเพชรเกษม มุ่งสู่สี่แยกเทศบาล แล้วเลี้ยวเข้าซอยหัวหิน 76 (ถนนดำเนินเกษม) ตรงเข้าไปสุดทาง ก็เจอสถานีรถไฟหัวหิน
